How to treat sciatic nerve pain


Have you ever suffered from the condition called sciatica? If you have, you know exactly what I am speaking of, and how debilitating it can be.

When you’re going through it, all you can think about is how to treat sciatic pain. That raw nerve pain that shoots down the back of your buttocks into your hamstring, and possibly all the way down your leg.

The pain can be so horrendous that you don’t even want to get out of bed in the morning, or go to work, or do anything and everything that involves your day to day life.

Basics of Sciatic Nerve Pain

Normally, it starts as just some postural dysfunction that you’re not even aware of. If you’re like most people, you’ll ignore the slight discomfort and continue with your day-to-day life. You may even believe that this little discomfort will just go away on its own.

But the discomfort continues to grow and grow, until one day it is too much to handle. At that point, you’ll probably decide to visit your local Las Vegas primary care doctor for answers.

Traditionally, you’ll be examined, x-rayed, and prescribed some sort of anti-inflammatory drug. If you’re lucky, you’ll be prescribed physical therapy treatment as well. There are several excellent physical therapists practicing in Summerlin, Las Vegas. Finding a good one will not be difficult. However, through all of this, you may never have been told how, or why this specific condition is happening to you.

I’m sure your doctor will explain what the pain is. He or she will tell you that you have a nerve impingement that is sending pain or referring pain down the back of our buttocks and thigh into our leg. But, normally your doctor won’t explain why the pain is. That is, what specifically brought on this condition.

This is mainly because common practice in Western medicine doesn’t normally involve taking the time to investigate to find the true cause of the condition. The normal practice is to simply address the symptom.

This is where you must be your own advocate. You need to find your own answers.

In Las Vegas, as in most cities, that can be a daunting task. Where do you look? What are you even looking for? How do you find the right way, or person who can help you address this issue?

Identify the Condition of Sciatic Nerve Pain:

Your first step is to find a source, or an individual that is knowledgeable about the condition. Obviously, a general physician knows what the condition is. Unfortunately, general physicians do not usually have time to help you investigate and uncover the cause of your pain.

You must look for help in regards to this. You have to find that needle in the haystack, that person, or place that can help you be a detective to find out what it is in your day-to-day life that might be bringing this sciatic nerve pain on.

Believe me, here in Las Vegas, there are lots of resources out there. Some are good. Unfortunately, some bad. You need help to find the cause. You don’t want to simply put a Band-Aid on a gaping wound, and expect it to go away.

The way to treat Sciatic Nerve Pain after identification:

In addition to environmental questions, I also take a long look at your postural stability. Proper structural or skeletal alignment has a tremendous impact on the cause of the sciatic nerve pain.

Postural distortions can be the foundation for condition and disease. Since muscles and tendons contain the nerve fibers, they can sometimes be in a state of hyper-contracture.

Remember, our skeletal system does not move of its own volition, it requires the contraction of muscles.

Sometimes these muscles become confused, and stay in a state of hyper-contracture. Many times sciatic nerve pain can be resolved by being returning to a balanced state of structural alignment.

I begin this investigation by simply conducting a proper postural analysis. This analysis directs the manipulation of the nerve fibers in the soft tissue. The goal is to create a more balanced structural alignment. It is this balanced alignment that takes away the compression of the specific nerve bundle that is causing the sciatic nerve pain.

With this postural analysis and the information regarding lifestyle, I can make certain suggestions to help avoid future hyper-contracture. These suggestions might include modifications in exercise routine, specific stretches, and work ergonomics.

The goal, of course, is to assist you in avoiding the possible activities that bring on the hyper-contracture of these specific muscles and tissues will help you avoid future sciatic nerve pain.
